Forgive yourself for falling stupidly in love with this fabulously put together quintet that will make you want to dance, cry and croon all at once. While the sunshine is slipping away and the mornings are startly crisp. Their laidback 90’s Britpop tunes will transport you to warmer days with friends, blissing out in the sun with sandy feet.

The talented musical group formed in Canada but Melbourne based busy writing tunes for their upcoming EP later in the year after their most recent release of ‘Rose Coloured Glasses’ completely blowing us away.

Their sound of world fuelled rebellious pysche, indie rock laced with Britpop it is difficult not to bop your head along to sending you into a top tapping frenzy, plus some contemplative cheering.

We chat to Shane O’Keeffe to get to know the band that little bit better.

1 | What was the inspiration behind the band name?

We toyed around with a few ideas, and originally landed on Pentacoastal (not to be confused with Pentacostal), after getting asked one too many times if we were a Christian surf band we ditched then name and Smoke Rings was born.

2 | How did you guys get together?

Lauren and I were playing in a band whilst in Canada and starting writing our own material during our downtime. When we returned back to Melbourne we asked our friend Jon if he wanted to play guitar. Liam and I met on Gumtree of all places, and his housemate happened to play bass… Therefore, it worked out nicely.

3 | What are your earliest musical memories?

I remember my mum giving me a second-hand cassette player that had a Chubby Checker cassette in it. I was living on the Gold Coast and would sit outside my house playing the hits for passers by.

4 | Smoke Rings need a clubhouse – where do you find you hang out and make music the most?

One of our friends owns a guitar repair store in Brunswick East. It is in this great space shared with Flightless Records. We essentially play in a shop front window where anyone passing by can stop and have a listen. Now and then people wait for the song to finish and tell us what they like or don’t like about it, it’s pretty cool.

5 | Who is your biggest music influence?

It changes all the time. We have been listening to a lot of Happy Mondays lately.

 6 | What’s the band before – stage ritual?

Usually trying to find Chris (Our bass player)

7 | Where is your dream place to perform?

There are so many good venues, we would be pumped to play at The Forum in Melbourne, really love that room. The Horseshoe in Toronto, Canada is also a favorite… for nostalgic sticky carpet reasons

 8 | What’s on your to-do list for the rest of 2016?

We have a video coming out really soon, and a video for our next single in the works. Our debut EP comes out in August and we are hitting the road in September for that. Besides that, we have a bunch of new material and look at recording later in the year.
Take up Yoga. Quit Smoking.

9 | What’s something all five members of Smoke Rings could agree on?

Striped T-Shirts.
