‘EACH MOMENT A DIAMOND’ TOUR.
With his timeless pieces of art, an eternal array of switched on tunefulness, stunning pastiche of electronics, organics and the world that orbits around him. Let the talented Melbourne producer Roland Tings transport you to another world without you leaving the comfort of your own living room.
Roland Tings aka Rohan Newman made his debut on L.A. soil with based cult label 100% SILK way back in 2012 following the recurrent pathways left by early pioneers like Robert Hood, Larry Heard and A Guy Called Gerald. Staying true to the ethos, he diverges; he is literally the only guy who can bring as much heat to the floor as there is in the air right now.
With Roland Tings returning after a whirlwind 6 months of touring with Chrome Sparks, RUFUS & Laneway Festival. Roland is now ready to unveil his latest body of work, with forthcoming EP ‘Each Moment a Diamond’. The six – track release is an enigmatic compilation of his euphoric techno to infectious pop songs and hypnotic synthscapes. After years of playing solo, Roland Tings live sets have expanded with drummer Billy, allowing a style of colourful, upbeat production with a touch of visceral freeform excursions of contagious head bops and foot tapping.
1 | What was the first album you’ve ever owned?
It was the Presidents Of The USA album in the mid 90s. Millions of peaches baby!
2 | What word do people incorrectly use by describing your genre of music?
An unimpressed bar owner said I was playing “progressive house” last week. I was DJing so it wasn’t exactly my music. Still offended though.
3 | What’s been the difference between your live sets and DJ sets?
The live set is basically a band now. There’s a drummer, keyboards and we play all my own music.
4 | How long have you been working on ‘Each Moment a Diamond For’?
It probably took about 2 years from start to finish, but in that time I made a huge amount of music, enough for several albums. Probably enough for several different project. Each moment was then put together from the best bits of this huge stack of music.
5 | What’s been your favourite part of making the album?
Just going to the studio every day and working on music. The busier you get with music the less time you actually have to go into the studio. I had a few good runs there of literally months of nothing but studio time.
6 | Where did your songwriting process take place for the album?
All over the place! I wrote music everywhere I went. In the studio in Melbourne, at home, with George Nicholas in Sydney, with Ben Plant in LA, on top of a mountain in Tasmania, on planes, in the back room at my managers office.
7 | What was inspiring you this time around? Were there any experiences in particular that made their mark onto the record?
There’s no one thing that inspired me, it was more a document of me learning about what it’s like to be an artist, how to make work, how to have ideas.
8 | You’ve worked with a vocalist (Nylo) for the first time ever, how did that go?
It was really great, I took the instrumental to my friend Ben Plant at his place in LA, we came up with some rough ideas and a few hours later Nylo came by and tried out a few vocal ideas, then we all spent a few days writing lyrics and the track was more or less done. It was a very interesting process and much different to how I usually work!
9 | Was it difficult to adapt to a duo now that you have a drummer on your live sets as of just recent.
It has certainly been a lot of work to put the duo set together but the pay off is worth it. It adds a whole new dimension to the live show. People connect more with the energy of the performance when they see a drummer performing. And it also allows us to explore different dynamics more effectively than simply turning the drum machine down. When a drummer plays quietly it demands more attention from the audience.
10 | What’s been the most memorable place you’ve toured in your career?
I played my first ever shows in Japan, that was an insane experience.
